Letter identification is a standard that we spend a lot of time on in kindergarten. Even after the majority of my class has mastered this standard, I am still teaching it to students who did not master their letter names during intervention groups. I spend a lot of time looking for engaging and hands-on letter identification activities to use with my students throughout the whole school year, and I wanted to share one of our class favorites with you today!
For this activity, all you need is a Roll, Say, Cover game board, a dice, and some small manipulatives (I like to use seasonal erasers, but you can really use anything!). Students can play in a small group, by themselves, or with a partner. [Keep reading to the end to grab this for free!]
To play, the student will roll the dice and say the letter name of the first letter in that column. Then, they will cover that letter with one of their manipulatives. They will roll again (or their partner/next person in their group will go) until one of their columns reaches the top.
The great thing about this game is that it’s also versatile. If you have some students who are struggling with letter naming fluency, you can have them roll the dice and say the names of all of the letters in that column quickly. Have students struggling with letter sounds? You could switch it up and have them say the letter sound instead of the letter name.
