Let’s be real. Teaching writing in kindergarten is hard. A few of your students might be able to write some words, but for the most part, everyone needs help figuring out what sound comes next at exactly the same time. There’s twenty-something of them. And one of you. Besides figuring out how to clone yourself (are you sure we can’t do this yet?), there’s really no way to help them all at the same time. I’ve been there, and I know the struggle. The “just stretch it out and I’ll be right there,” and the “O! It’s O! Just write O!” struggle. Let’s just say it’s left me with the maybe-this-is-why-I’m-not-getting-teacher-of-the-year feeling more than I’d like to admit.
Luckily, I’ve cracked the code on a simple way to teach writing in kindergarten. A simple way to help your students gain independence while writing. (And no, I haven’t figured out how to clone myself… yet.)
Since one of the hardest parts about teaching writing in kindergarten is being in all the places, I realized I need to bring all of the resources TO my students. By doing this, they have everything they need right at their fingertips!
Sure, it takes a little bit of teaching so your students can learn how to use their new, grown up writing offices. But after practicing a few times, they become more independent and excited to use their new tool!
Now, you won’t be able to sit back and take a coffee break, but you WILL be able to focus your attention on the students who need you most!
