Teachers need breaks. We squeeze twelve months of work into a ten month period, and pour every ounce of our soul into our kids each year. We use our breaks to recharge our batteries so we can give even more to our students. But we never could have imagined a “break” of this sort: an indefinite break from our classrooms, where most of us do not know when or where our teaching will continue. The phrase “at home learning” is new to all of us.
Teachers all across the country are being asked to create at home classrooms with as little as a few hours worth of notice. And we are not only rising to the challenge, we are killing it.
Some teachers, though, are yet to be given clear directions. Many of these teachers, myself included, are feeling anxious about what’s to come. We want to continue to support our students’ learning while they are at home, yet we are waiting for some sort of guidance.
Parents are reaching out to us, looking for answers, and we have none to give. The best we can do right now, is point them in the direction of free online learning resources and websites. Things we have used in our classroom (and some that we haven’t), that can continue the pace of learning while we are in this waiting period.
