I don’t know about you, but I am NOT a fan of winter. So every year on Groundhog day, I send good vibes to my furry friend, Phil, in hopes that he won’t see his shadow, and we will have an early Spring! If you like celebrating Groundhog Day in your classroom, here are some easy Groundhog Day activities that you can do with your kindergarteners!
1. Make an opinion graph
Have your students vote on whether or not they want the groundhog to see his shadow. Talk about creating the graph, which choice got the most votes, which choice got the least votes, and how many more kids voted for one choice over the other.
2. Opinion writing
Follow up your opinion graph by incorporating some writing into your day. Have your students explain their vote by writing the reason why they voted the way that they did. (I like using this because song to help my students write the word.)
3. Groundhog Day song
This Jack Hartmann song is catchy and also explains Groundhog Day very simply for kindergarteners. Who doesn’t love Jack Hartmann?
4. Groundhog Day video
This video is more informational, but still kid friendly.
5. Make a tree map
Do a little nonfiction reading or watching, and create a tree map with your students all about groundhogs! It’s fun to do a mini unit of study centered around a holiday or event!
6. Groundhog Day books
Grumpy Groundhog and Substitute Groundhog are two of my favorite fiction books about Groundhog Day. They’re cute, fun, and just enjoyable stories. My students love them every year!
There are lots of activities you can do centered around Groundhog Day. I’m always looking to keep it simple and fun!
